Arab Political Parties Studies Website Hacked

I was browsing some websites and I landed on the APPStudies.org website
which is clearly hacked as you can see from the screenshot. I don't know
since when. I keep hearing through friends or seeing on the Internet of
many websites related to human rights, to peace-building, to civil
society and to politics in the Arab world and in Lebanon hacked,
survived a hacking attempt (code injection) or undergoing denial of
service attacks.

This really shows that building and keeping websites is an uphill battle
for change advocates in the Arab world.

#Racism in #Lebanon: Murr TV reports on the perverted acts of non-Lebanese in Bourj Hammoud

As if Lebanese are angels, dismissing the fact the Bourj Hammoud is a
much needed cultural and economic hub for migrant workers in Lebanon,
Murr TV (a.k.a. Lebanese MTV) produced for the 8'oclock news hour a
report on the "types and forms of perverted acts committed by
non-Lebanese in Bourj Hammoud", which constitute "danger to the
neighborhood". The image is widely circulating on the Internet where MTV
is accused of blatant racism.

Lebanese and Palestinian NGOs discuss ownership of real estate property by Palestinian refugees in #Lebanon

Today, the representatives of over 30 Lebanese association and human rights organization met at Galeria Hotel in Beirut, with representatives of the Campaign for Palestinian Refugees Real Estate Property Ownership in Lebanon. The campaign was founded by 12 non-governmental organizations working in the Palestinian community in Lebanon.

During the meeting that I contributed to organizing, a presentation was given of the initiative to amend the law on foreign ownership of real estate and to remove the prohibition of real estate property ownership for Palestinian refugees in Lebanon. In 2001, the Lebanese Parliament amended the 1969 Presidential Decree on foreign acquisition of property and prohibited Palestinians from owning property, a right they had for decades.

The campaign said that the prohibition of real estate property ownership contradicted the principle of non-discrimination, human rights principles and Lebanon’s international obligations with this regard. A one year plan of action was discussed, aiming at mobilizing public opinion and gaining support for affording the right to own real estate property for Palestinians in Lebanon. The Lebanese associations submitted their questions and gave their input. A significant number voiced their support to the campaign and their willingness to join it.

Two images from the Marcel Khalife concert last Friday

The concert was sooo badly organized that everyone who attended were
disappointed. It was a very "communist" organization. And there was a
severe disconnect between Marcel and the attendees unfortunately. But it was nice still :)

Meeting with Prime Minister Mikati today morning

Today, a group of civil society representatives had a meeting with Prime
Minister Mikati. All in all, approximately 36 NGOs and organizations
were represented covering all thematic issues. We went in just as
Lebanese University professors were going out from their lobbying
meeting with the prime minister (they want a raise in their salaries).

The meeting went well. But in 30 minutes, we were only able to talk
about the new electoral law, taxation reform and social justice, and
Palestinian refugee rights. When it came to women's rights, things
turned 'negative' to say the least. The prime minister stated that we
need to structure our cooperation and find mechanism of cooperation. I
said that we have multiple interlocutors for Palestinian refugee rights,
the Lebanese Palestinian Dialog Committee, the Minister of Labor, the
Parliamentary committees namely the one currently updating foreigner
property ownership laws. At that point he said that he's seeing tomorrow
MP Robert Ghanem, head of the justice and administration committee and
that he will set up the meeting for the Palestinian rights groups with
MP Ghanem.

...to be continued...

on 9/11 2001

On 9/11 2001, I was in a journalism training around Jounieh, North of
Beirut. It was the afternoon. We had no TV in the room. We got a phone
call about the events.
We turned on the radio. A woman was reading the news: "air planes that
had fallen in US on twin towers. more planes had fallen".
The woman then she pauses for a few seconds. We felt that there was
fresh news just in. She reads the first words and bursts into hilarious
laughing live on air. She couldn't believe it.
A few seconds later, a man picks up with a serious and austere voice and
reads that the twin towers had fallen.
On my way back home to Beirut that afternoon, I was looking around from
my car window. Drivers were mostly calm and incredulous, inexpressive
because they didn't know what to make of the news they're hearing on the
car radio.

USD 215 million paid by tax payers for corrupt politicians #Wikileaks #Lebanon

(...)

Bifani ridiculed the GOL cronyism involved in the  USD 215 million court verdict that MP Nicholas Fattoush, a  member of the Future Bloc, received in December 2005 for the  illegal two-year closure of his family's sand and rock  quarry.  Bifani asked how Fattoush's company could be granted  USD 215 million when his company has never reported any  profits to the state during its operation and questioned how  judges managed to return a verdict on Fattoush's suit in only  eight months when many other business cases had languished  for years.  Bifani wanted to know why the judges involved in  the case didn\'t ask for the Ministry of Finance's views  before issuing such a large verdict.  Bifani said that  Fattoush had received a quick and substantial verdict because  of his political connections and hinted that PM Siniora had  influence with the judges.  He asked how the GOL could expect  the ordinary taxpayer to pay more in Value Added Taxes (VAT)  when scandals such as this are still widespread.
